About Mega Millions

Mega Millions is one of America's two major multi-state lottery games (with Powerball). It started in 1996 as "The Big Game" and was renamed Mega Millions in 2002. The game is played in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The world record Mega Millions jackpot of $1.537 billion was won in South Carolina in October 2018.

Megaplier Option

For an additional $1, Megaplier can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x. The Match 5 prize automatically becomes $5 million with Megaplier. The Megaplier number is drawn separately before the main drawing.

Mega Millions uses 5 balls from 1-70 plus 1 Mega Ball from 1-25. Powerball uses 5 balls from 1-69 plus 1 Powerball from 1-26. Mega Millions has slightly worse jackpot odds (1:302.6M vs 1:292.2M) but different prize structures. Mega Millions draws are Tuesday/Friday, while Powerball draws are Monday/Wednesday/Saturday.
